Never Let Me Go (Florence and the Machine teaching me how to pray)

I just listened to an Apple playlist that started with Mumford and Son’s, “Lover of the Light”… then moved to Coldplay’s, “Hymn for the Weekend”… and then introduced me to an old Florence and the Machine song, “Never Let Me Go”.

Taking in Florence Welch’s words they became mine. I felt like Jonah, Job, and the Psalmist—meeting God in the depths: a God that would never let me go. In my imagination God’s good ocean was carrying and delivering a sinner like me.

The choral section (in particular) became a communal prayer and these bible verses started coming to mind:

The Lord is the greatest God, king over all other gods. He holds the deepest part of the earth in his hands…”

Psalm 95:3-4, CEV

“If I go to the heavens, you are there.

If I make my bed in the depths, you are there….”

Psalm 139:8, NIV

“Job, have you ever walked

on the ocean floor?

God to Job 38:16, CEV

“I will never fail you.

I will never abandon you.”

Hebrews 13:5, NLT

“I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish.

No one can take them out of my hand.

Jesus in John 10:28, NAB

Now that you’ve read them, listen to the song.
